Hunter Valley weather & Barrington Tops

Snow is rare in the Hunter Valley region but one of your best chances of seeing snow is in the Barrington Tops National Park. With an elevation of up to 1500 meters the conditions can be just right to transform the park into a winter wonderland.

How to Get There

The best place is probably around the PolBlue camping ground 68km North West of Gloucester. Directions. Check with National Parks Scone on (02) 6540 2300 for road conditions. Road may be closed at times.

From the Tops Retreat

The Tops Retreat is closeby to the national park. To get to Polblue simply turn right at the entry of the retreat (Jems Creek Rd) on the Scone Rd and travel around 30 minutes West.

When

There are normally only a few days of the year where the condition are right for snow but July & August are generally best. July 2011 saw some quite deep falls.

Safety First

Parts of Barrington Tops are quite remote so always take precautions. Tempratures can be well below freezing so always have plenty of warm clothing. Roads can be snow or ice affected - drive carefully. There's no food or fuel available on the Scone Rd between Gloucester & the national park so come prepared. Mobile phone reception is limited too. Always tell someone where you're going.

GENERAL WEATHER

In summer the Barrington Tops is somewhat cooler than coastal areas and can be a good escape from the heat. Conditions can be quite changeable though so always be prepared even in the warmer months. Fire bans may be in place during the warmer months.
