White water kayaking on the Barrington River is sure to provide it. The Barrington River rises in the pristine Barrington Tops World Heritage area. This ancient woodland dates back to the Gondwanaland age, before the continents began to separate. Ancient Antarctic Beeches and other local flora and alpine grasses grace the landscape, which boasts nearly half of Australia’s plant species, a third of the mammals and birds, including endangered species.

The rivers that rise here are cool and clean delivering their liquid gold babbling or racing over rocky bottomed rivers on their way to the coast.

The Barrington is famous for its kayaking, the thrill and excitement of the white water when the river is high and the calmer enjoyment when the river is low or in the lower reaches of the river where it is possible to slowly paddle down enjoying the surrounding forests and farmland and listening to the sounds of the birds while keeping an eye out for sun baking water dragons and platypus nesting holes. This river provides a natural playground for everyone.

These adventures can start just 35 minutes from The Retreat where exciting kayaking tours for all grades and skill levels are catered for. For some of the white water stretches of the river previous experience on the Barrington is necessary. Safety is paramount and all the latest safety equipment is supplied. What you need to bring is enthusiasm and a sense of adventure! Personal clothes, old shoes that can get wet, and thermals are handy if it's cold. Wetsuits can be hired if needed. Booking is essential.

This kind of adventure can suit families with children over 6 years on the quieter stretches of the Barrington when they are in a canoe with two adults. For thrill seekers this is your opportunity for an adrenaline rush!
