We have 3 km of the prestine Dilgry River at Barrington Tops

The Dilgry River was noted as the cleanest river on the Australian mainland when the EPA was testing for water quality during the 1990s.  It is still a pure and clean river with delightful fishing spots both for fly fishing and for those using lures and bait.  The Dilgry River runs through The Tops Organic Retreat and recently the track has been upgraded from the Retreat down to the waterfalls, swimming holes and fishing spots on the river.

Of course the Dilgry is not the only river in which to fish on the Barrington Tops. Trout, both rainbow and brown are found in many of the rivers rising on the plateau. Muddy dams, whether private or dams like the Glenbawn Dam provide a haven for carp, bass and mullet. 

Fishing for carp from the wall of Glenbawn Dam using live shrimp seems to do the trick.  Bass are also found in the Glenbawn Dam sheltering at the edges, white grubs or lures seem to attract them.

The Little Manning and Gloucester River, north of the Gloucester Tops Falls, also have good sources of trout and challenging casting opportunities similar to the Dilgry as the river banks are narrow and the scrub in parts is thick.

During the summer months Junction Pools found at the end of a 4WD track from Polblue provides a good spot for several fish species including rainbow and brown trout.

For those entering the sport of fishing Rocky Crossing or Faulkland are an excellent starting place.  Mullet, catfish and bass can be found at these spots.  Popular bait for mullet is either worms or dough, for bass white grubs or lures, and catfish love worms. Rocky Crossing reserve has good picnic spots and is an ideal place for a family outing.

The trout season ends after the long June weekend and is closed until the October long weekend.  This is an important window that allows the trout time to breed in our rivers.  Dam fishing is open all year round.

When fishing in New South Wales waters, both salt and fresh water it is necessary to have paid a fishing fee and have a receipt on you at all times.  Exempt from a fishing fee is children under 18 years, an adult assisting a person under 18 years, a person fishing in a private dam of less than 2 hectares, as well as certain Commonwealth pensioner card holders.  These fishing fees go towards helping to improve recreational fishing in New South Wales.
